Copper Moon Coffee Unveils Rwandan Coffee in Support of Women Coffee Farmers

Copper Moon Coffee is excited to partner with the women at Hingakawa Women’s Coffee Cooperative to provide beans for our Rwanda coffee. This medium roast is made of 100% Arabica beans that were farmed by the women of Hingakawa before making their way to our roastery in Lafayette, Indiana. It is creamy in body, with flavor notes of mandarin citrus, honey, and clove.

Our goal with this new coffee is not only to bring you a high-quality cup but also to help improve the well-being of the women behind the Rwanda coffee. We want to support their access to capital and see them saving money for the future. We want to support their access to medical, dental, and other basic services. We also want to continue our relationship with the women at Hingakawa Women’s Coffee Cooperative so that we can see them further trained and turned into leaders in their community. From now on, when you are drinking a cup of Copper Moon’s Rwanda coffee, just know that you are helping to support something larger than just your morning brew. The coffee industry has been a cornerstone in the rapprochement and rejuvenation of Rwanda, and it wouldn’t have happened without courageous women such as those working at Hingakawa.

Just 25 years ago, Rwanda suffered one of the largest scale genocides in world history. Many people wondered if the mess would ever be cleaned up and the country returned to the state it once was. Looking back, you can see that the events of the summer in 1994 will never be forgotten. However, thanks to the women of Rwanda and the country’s fertile coffee-growing soil, the people are finally starting to look positively toward the future.

Before the Rwandan Genocide, men were traditionally in charge of tilling soil for coffee and other cash crops. But with most of the country’s men unable to work, it was the women that started working to rebuild the Rwandan coffee industry. These miraculous women put aside all ethnic differences with grace and forgiveness with the purpose of using leadership to initiate a delicate healing process.

One such group of amazing women works at the Hingakawa Women’s Coffee Cooperative in the Gakenke district of Rwanda. Literally meaning “Let’s Grow Coffee” in Kinyarwanda, Hingakawa’s brave women have decided to make poverty their mutual enemy and work together to help Rwanda become a successful coffee-growing nation once again.
